Revolutionizing the Experimental Aircraft Market: Sodium Battery Tech Takes Flight

AeroSodium batteries, a safer and more efficient alternative to lithium-ion technology, are now available for experimental aircraft applications. This marks a significant milestone in aviation power systems, announced on March 7, 2026.

The newly introduced sodium-based batteries are primarily designed for use in experimental aircraft. They offer several advantages over traditional power sources. Although these batteries are not currently standard for certified aircraft, company officials have indicated that installation may be possible via a 337 field approval process for owners of certified aircraft interested in this technology.

Sodium-ion batteries address key safety concerns associated with lithium-ion technology. Sodium, being inherently safer, does not require the complex battery management systems that lithium batteries rely on for safe operation. Moreover, this technology offers performance comparable to lithium batteries, while being more abundant and cost-effective, as sodium is derived from common salt.

These batteries offer substantial weight savings compared to traditional lead-acid batteries—approximately one-third the weight—while delivering similar or even superior starting power for both piston and turbine engines. They also boast a higher resting voltage than lithium alternatives and are compatible with any size alternator or generator system.

This development represents a significant leap forward in aviation electrification. It provides experimental aircraft builders with a safer, more accessible battery technology that does not compromise performance for safety.
