Increased Baggage Fees by American Airlines Due to Rising Fuel Costs
American Airlines, following the footsteps of Delta, United, Southwest, and other major U.S. carriers, has raised the fees for checked baggage. The reason behind this increase is the dramatic surge in jet fuel costs, a consequence of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The new fees, marking a $10 increase for the first and second checked bags, came into effect for tickets purchased on or after April 9, 2026.
As per the revised pricing structure, passengers will now be charged $50 for their first checked bag and $60 for the second when paying at the airport. However, a $5 discount is available for those who opt to prepay online, bringing the fees down to $45 and $55 respectively. The fee for a third checked bag has seen a significant increase, now standing at $200.
Starting from May 18, 2026, Basic Economy passengers will face even steeper charges, with the fees set at $55 for the first bag and $65 for the second.
Jet fuel prices have seen a dramatic surge since the beginning of 2026. Some reports suggest that the prices have more than doubled compared to the pre-conflict levels. Instead of raising the base fares, which often attract higher taxes and regulatory limits, airlines have chosen to increase ancillary fees like baggage charges. This industry-wide increase in fees mirrors the enormous financial pressure facing carriers. For instance, Delta Air Lines is reportedly planning to spend an additional $2 billion on fuel in the second quarter alone.
