Federal Reserve and Treasury Alert Banks to AI Cybersecurity Threat
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urgently convened with major U.S. bank CEOs this week. The discussion centered around the cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic’s new AI model, Mythos. This model has shown unprecedented capabilities in detecting software vulnerabilities.
The meeting, held at the Treasury headquarters in Washington on Tuesday, saw the participation of executives from top financial institutions. These included Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon was invited but could not attend. The purpose of this gathering was to ensure financial institutions are aware of the potential risks from AI models. These models are capable of identifying and exploiting security flaws across operating systems and browsers.
Anthropic launched Mythos this week in a limited capacity as part of Project Glasswing. This is a defensive cybersecurity initiative with partners including tech giants like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. The AI company claims that Mythos has already identified thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities. Some of these vulnerabilities date back decades and are found in every major operating system and web browser. In one instance, the model discovered a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD.
“The dangers of getting this wrong are obvious, but if we get it right, there is a real opportunity to create a fundamentally more secure internet and world,” said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The company is limiting access to approximately 40 organizations and committing up to $100 million in usage credits. This is to help secure critical software before the technology becomes widely available.
