Global consumer goods behemoth, Unilever, has made headlines with its latest acquisition. The company announced on Thursday that it will acquire the U.S.-based nutritional supplements brand, Grüns. The deal, valued at a staggering $1.2 billion, marks Unilever’s first significant acquisition since its agreement to sell its food business to McCormick.
The acquisition of Grüns underscores Unilever’s strategic shift towards the higher-growth sectors of beauty and wellbeing. Grüns, a company founded in 2023 by Chad Janis, has swiftly risen to prominence in the U.S. greens supplement space, thanks to its gummy-based daily nutrition products.
“We see a significant opportunity to scale the brand within our Wellbeing business,” said Jostein Solheim, Unilever Wellbeing CEO. Grüns has cultivated a strong, digitally native, culture-driven following by offering a more accessible alternative to traditional supplement powders and pills. The brand’s focus is on enhancing consumer adherence to daily wellness routines.
Grüns founder Chad Janis expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “With Unilever behind us, we can reach more people, move faster, and continue raising the bar on what an enjoyable daily wellness habit can be.”
The deal, which awaits regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, is anticipated to close later this year. This acquisition strategically positions Unilever to capitalize on the burgeoning supplements market. It particularly targets the functional nutrition and vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) categories in the United States.
