Delta and Southwest Adjust Baggage Fees in Response to Rising Fuel Costs
Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines have recently announced a $10 increase in checked baggage fees. This move aligns them with United and JetBlue, who have also shifted the burden of rising costs onto consumers. This industry-wide change comes in response to the escalating jet fuel prices, which have been significantly affected by the conflict in Iran.
These changes will be effective for bookings made on or after April 8 for Delta and April 9 for Southwest. Consequently, passengers will now be required to pay $45 for the first checked bag and $55 for the second bag. These prices mark an increase from the previous fees of $35 and $45 respectively. Notably, Delta’s third checked bag fee has seen an even more significant increase, jumping from $150 to $200.
The fee increases are a direct response to the surge in jet fuel prices, which have now reached around $209 per barrel globally. This is a substantial increase from the $85-$90 per barrel seen in February, prior to the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz oil shipping corridor due to the Middle East conflict. Both airlines have stated that these changes “reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics.”
Loyalty program members and premium cabin passengers will continue to receive complimentary baggage allowances. Furthermore, the new fees will not apply to long-haul international flights.
