Emergency Airworthiness Directive Issued for Bell 505 Helicopters Due to Safety Concerns
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency airworthiness directive (AD 2026-05-51) for certain Bell 505 helicopters. This urgent action addresses a critical safety issue that could result in a total loss of control if left unchecked.
This directive applies specifically to Bell Textron Canada Limited Model 505 helicopters with serial numbers 65011 and subsequent, equipped with specific ballast box assemblies. The FAA’s decision was prompted by Transport Canada’s emergency order, which identified issues with a hinge assembly on the aft movable ballast box assembly.
The identified problem involves potential plastic deformation and improper pin engagement in the knuckles of the door hinge. This defect could allow ballast weights to escape the ballast box and strike the tail rotor assembly during flight—a scenario that could have catastrophic consequences.
The emergency AD, issued on March 6, 2026, mandates an immediate revision of the Rotorcraft Flight Manual (RFM) Limitations section. This revision prohibits the use of ballast weights within the aft movable ballast box assembly. The directive came into effect on April 16, 2026, for operators who did not receive direct notification.
Operators of Bell 505 are strongly urged to comply immediately with this directive to ensure flight safety. The Bell 505, a popular light single-engine helicopter, is used worldwide in various roles including training, private ownership, tourism, and law enforcement.
