Microsoft’s Monumental $10 Billion AI Investment in Japan in Partnership with SoftBank
Microsoft has recently announced a colossal investment of $10 billion in Japan, spanning from 2026 through 2029. This marks one of the tech titan’s largest international commitments, with a primary focus on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The investment was unveiled during a visit to Tokyo by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith. This strategic move includes partnerships with Japanese telecommunications giant SoftBank Corp. and cloud provider Sakura Internet to develop AI computing resources and data centers within Japan. Following the announcement, Sakura Internet’s stock skyrocketed by 20% on Friday, reflecting the market’s strong confidence in this collaboration.
In addition to infrastructure, Microsoft has pledged to train 1 million engineers and developers in Japan by 2030. To achieve this, they will be partnering with major Japanese IT companies, including:
- NTT Data Corp.
- NEC
- Fujitsu
- Hitachi
The plan also encompasses strengthening cybersecurity cooperation with Japan’s government and supporting the development of domestic large language models.
This investment aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s priorities to stimulate economic growth through advanced technologies, while ensuring data sovereignty. This means all computing resources will remain within Japan’s borders to address sensitive data concerns.
