Revolutionary Changes to Canada’s Passport Program: 30-Day Guarantee and Fee Adjustments
Canada has rolled out two significant changes to its passport program this week, affecting millions of travelers. As of April 1, 2026, the Canadian government has implemented a revolutionary “30 days or free” guarantee for passport processing. This marks the most substantial revamp of Canada’s passport program in years.
The new policy ensures that applicants will receive a full automatic refund of their passport fees if processing exceeds 30 business days. This is a departure from the previous partial-refund system, which only offered a 25-50% refund for delays. The guarantee is applicable to complete applications submitted online, in person, or by mail. The best part? Refunds are issued automatically, requiring no action from the applicants.
However, alongside this customer-friendly policy, passport fees saw an increase on March 31, 2026, the first hike since 2013. The new pricing is as follows:
- A 10-year adult passport now costs $163.50 (up from $160)
- A 5-year adult passport is priced at $122.50 (up from $120)
- Child passports rose to $58.50 from $57
The fees will now be adjusted annually based on inflation, as per the Service Fees Act.
Despite the fee increases, the Canadian passport continues to hold great value. As per the March 2026 Henley Passport Index, it ranks 7th globally, offering visa-free access to 182 destinations. This is three more than the United States passport, which ranks 10th with access to 179 destinations.
