India Introduces Mandatory e-Arrival Card System from April 1
India has officially replaced its traditional paper disembarkation form with a mandatory online e-Arrival Card. This new requirement, effective from April 1, 2026, applies to all foreign visitors, including OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card-holders. This digital shift marks a significant change in India’s immigration procedures.
The e-Arrival Card generates a QR code that travelers must present at immigration checkpoints upon arrival. Indian authorities anticipate that this digital system will halve immigration clearance times, thereby enhancing the arrival experience at major airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. However, travelers who neglect to complete the form online before departure may encounter delays at immigration.
Corporate travel managers and tourism operators are urged to update pre-trip checklists promptly. This ensures all travelers complete the digital form before departure. This initiative is in line with India’s broader digital transformation efforts and mirrors similar systems adopted by countries like Australia and the United States. The introduction of this system comes as India continues to develop its tourism infrastructure and aims to attract more international visitors in the wake of its robust post-pandemic recovery.
