Capella Kyoto: A New Luxury Hotel Experience in Historic Geisha District

Marking a significant milestone in Japan’s luxury hospitality, Capella Kyoto officially opened its doors on March 22, 2026. The grand opening was perfectly timed with the city’s legendary cherry blossom season. This 89-room property is the first hotel in Japan under the prestigious Capella Hotels and Resorts brand.

Nestled in the historic Miyagawa-cho kagai geisha district, the hotel is just a few steps away from the Kenninji Temple and the Kamo River. The property, a masterpiece designed by the renowned Kengo Kuma & Associates in collaboration with Brewin Design Office, beautifully reimagines Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouses. It features layered spaces, narrow alleys, and hidden gardens, offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity.

The hotel is part of a three-part cultural development project. This includes the restored Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo Theatre, a historic training ground for Kyoto’s geiko and maiko, and a new community center. The hotel’s signature “Capella Curates” program offers guests exclusive access to performances at the theatre and intimate cultural experiences that are usually not open to visitors.

Accommodations at Capella Kyoto range from Deluxe City Rooms to the luxurious 206-square-meter top-floor Capella Suite, offering panoramic views of the Higashiyama skyline. The hotel is also home to SoNoMa by SingleThread, a dining venue created in partnership with the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread restaurant from Sonoma, California, helmed by Chef Keita Tominaga. Additional amenities include the Auriga Spa with three private onsen rooms and multiple dining venues that celebrate Kyoto’s rich culinary heritage.
