Gap Leads the Fashion Industry with AI Checkout on Google Gemini
On March 24, 2026, Gap Inc. made a groundbreaking announcement. It has become the first major fashion retailer to integrate checkout directly within Google’s Gemini AI platform. This innovative move allows customers to complete purchases without leaving the AI assistant, marking a significant shift in consumer shopping habits. The traditional e-commerce websites are making way for conversational AI platforms.
Thanks to Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), shoppers can now explore products from Gap’s brands—such as Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta—right within Gemini. They can receive styling recommendations and complete the checkout process entirely within the platform. Google Pay handles the payment processing, while Gap takes care of shipping and logistics. Alongside this, Gap also announced the launch of an AI-powered fit guidance tool. This tool utilizes Bold Metrics’ Agentic Sizing Protocol to help reduce returns.
“It’s not just keyword search anymore, it’s conversations,” said Sven Gerjets, Chief Technology Officer at Gap Inc. This strategic move provides Gap access to hundreds of millions of Gemini users. It represents a competitive edge in a time when specialty retail is facing increasing pressure. A study by PYMNTS Intelligence revealed that 41% of consumers have used dedicated AI platforms for product discovery. Interestingly, a third of these consumers have completely replaced their previous shopping methods.
