Unprecedented Surge in Private Jet Arrivals in Maldives Amid Tourism Evolution
The Maldives has witnessed an astounding 166 percent increase in private jet arrivals. Between February 28 and March 14, 2026, a total of 128 private jets landed, a significant leap from just 70 aircraft during the same period the previous year. This surge mirrors a considerable shift in travel patterns, with luxury travelers seeking direct access to the island nation amidst ongoing aviation disruptions in the Middle East.
Data from the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) reveals that the average number of daily private jet arrivals escalated from approximately five last year to over 12 this year. March 3 set a single-day record with 18 jets landing. Maafaru International Airport has emerged as a specialized hub for private aviation, accommodating more than 25 private jets simultaneously during the peak season—the highest level of traffic the facility has ever managed.
Despite private jet travelers comprising only a fraction of the Maldives’ annual arrival target of 2.5 million visitors, their financial contribution is disproportionately substantial. Visit Maldives has recognized that this group generates significantly higher revenue per capita compared to regular tourists. However, overall tourist arrivals have dwindled due to disruptions impacting major Middle East transit hubs such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, which are vital for European travelers.
In a strategic response, Visit Maldives is initiating joint marketing campaigns targeting India, China, and Russia—markets less affected by Middle East developments.
