Elon Musk Reveals Ambitious $20 Billion Terafab Chip Plant in Austin

On March 21, 2026, Elon Musk announced plans for Terafab, a colossal $20-25 billion semiconductor fabrication facility in Austin, Texas. This ambitious project, a joint venture by Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, aims to produce one terawatt of computing power annually to support the companies’ burgeoning AI and robotics needs.

The facility, set to be located near Tesla’s headquarters on the North Campus of Giga Texas, will consolidate every stage of semiconductor production under one roof. This includes:

  • Chip design
  • Lithography
  • Fabrication
  • Memory production
  • Advanced packaging
  • Testing

Musk explained that current global chip manufacturers can only provide about 2 percent of what his companies will need for future projects.

Two distinct chip families will be produced at Terafab:

  1. Terrestrial inference chips for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, Cybercab robotaxis, and Optimus humanoid robots
  2. Specialized high-power chips designed for the harsh environment of space to power orbital AI satellites

The project targets 2-nanometer process technology with an initial output of 100,000 wafers per month, scaling eventually to 1 million. While the announcement generated significant excitement, industry experts note that building a cutting-edge chip fabrication facility is extremely complex, with comparable projects by TSMC taking years and costing tens of billions.
