NVIDIA Unveils IGX Thor: A Revolutionary Platform for Industrial AI and Robotics

NVIDIA has officially unveiled its IGX Thor platform, a robust industrial-grade edge AI computing system. This innovative platform is designed to infuse real-time physical AI capabilities into factories, hospitals, and autonomous machines. The announcement was made at the company’s GTC 2026 conference in San Jose this week.

The NVIDIA IGX Thor platform delivers an impressive AI computing performance, up to 8 times more powerful than its predecessor, the IGX Orin. This is made possible by the company’s advanced Blackwell architecture. The system is specifically engineered for safety-critical applications. It features a dedicated Functional Safety Island designed to meet the stringent ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 standards at ASIL D/SC3 levels.

Several major companies are already harnessing the power of this technology. Caterpillar is developing an AI-powered in-cabin assistant to enhance worker productivity and safety. Hitachi Rail is leveraging IGX Thor for predictive maintenance systems. In the healthcare sector, Johnson & Johnson is integrating the platform into its Polyphonic digital surgery platform. Medtronic is evaluating it for surgical robotic systems. The platform’s ability to combine high-speed sensor processing with enterprise-grade reliability and functional safety makes it ideal for applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to medical imaging and industrial robotics.

Developer kits are now available for purchase from worldwide distribution partners. The IGX T5000 module for embedded systems and IGX 7000 board kit for high-performance workstations are slated for release later this year.
