Intrepid Travel Halts Cuba Tours Amid Energy Crisis Until April 2026

Intrepid Travel, a responsible tour operator, has announced the suspension of all Cuba departures through April 30, 2026. This decision comes in response to the ongoing energy crisis in the island nation, affecting travelers booked on upcoming Cuba itineraries as the country grapples with repeated nationwide power outages.

The energy instability in Cuba, which recently experienced a major blackout on March 16 leaving approximately 10 million people without power, is attributed to fuel shortages. These shortages are a direct result of the U.S. blockade of Venezuelan gas and oil.

Travelers currently in Cuba will be able to complete their planned itineraries safely. However, those with bookings departing through April 30 have been offered options to either rebook to another destination, receive a travel credit for a future Intrepid trip, or request a full refund.

All impacted travelers will be contacted directly by the tour operator. For the most current information about affected travel, please visit Intrepid’s Travel Alerts page. The company will make decisions about departures after April 30 based on the evolving situation on the ground.

Despite the infrastructure challenges, Intrepid notes that Cuba offers an unforgettable cultural experience. Accommodations typically have backup generators for essential services during outages.
