DASH Diet: A Proven Strategy for Cognitive Health, Reveals Major Study

The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has emerged as the clear winner for protecting brain health and reducing cognitive decline risk, according to a major new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

This large-scale study followed over 159,000 adults for nearly two decades, comparing six different healthy eating patterns. The research revealed that participants who adhered to the DASH diet most closely (those in the 90th percentile) had a 41 percent lower risk of experiencing cognitive decline compared to those in the 10th percentile.

Dr. Kjetil Bjornevik, assistant professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and senior author of the study, stated that the DASH diet showed “the strongest and most consistent associations with both lower subjective cognitive decline and better objectively measured cognition.”

The benefits were most pronounced in adults aged 45-54, suggesting that midlife may be a crucial window for adopting dietary habits that protect cognition later in life. The key components of the DASH diet include:

  • Whole grains
  • Beans
  • Fish
  • Vegetables
  • Limited sodium intake

The study found that a higher intake of fish, leafy greens, and vegetables were associated with better cognitive outcomes. Conversely, processed meats and sugary foods were linked to worse results.
