Introducing the Revolutionary Google Maps Update with Gemini AI
On March 12, 2026, Google announced what it describes as the most significant update to Google Maps in over a decade. This update introduces two major AI-powered features: “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation,” both powered by its advanced Gemini AI models.
Ask Maps: Your Personal AI Assistant
The new Ask Maps feature transforms Google Maps into a conversational AI assistant, enabling users to ask complex, real-world questions using natural language. Instead of traditional keyword searches, users can now ask questions like “My phone is dying—where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”
The AI analyzes information from over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors to provide personalized recommendations with customized maps.
Immersive Navigation: A New Driving Experience
Immersive Navigation represents a complete transformation of the driving experience, introducing vivid 3D views that reflect buildings, terrain, and intersections in real-time. The feature highlights critical road details including:
- Lanes
- Crosswalks
- Traffic lights
- Stop signs
This helps drivers navigate confidently. Google’s Gemini models analyze fresh imagery from Street View and aerial photos to provide accurate, real-world views of routes, including landmarks and medians.
The update also includes natural voice guidance that sounds more like a human passenger, saying things like “Go past this exit and take the next one” instead of robotic directions. Maps now explains tradeoffs for alternate routes, such as showing a faster route with tolls versus a slower one without.
Availability
Ask Maps is rolling out now in the United States and India on iOS and Android devices, with desktop support coming soon. Immersive Navigation is launching in the U.S. today and will expand over the coming months to eligible devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in.
