Elon Musk Reveals Tesla’s Terafab Chip Factory Launch in a Week
Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, made an announcement on Saturday, March 14, 2026, that the company’s ambitious Terafab Project—a colossal in-house semiconductor fabrication facility—will be launched within a week. This marks a significant shift in Tesla’s strategy to control its own AI chip supply chain.
The Terafab project is one of the most ambitious vertical integration moves in Tesla’s history. The facility is designed to produce between 100 and 200 billion custom AI and memory chips per year, aiming for an initial output of 100,000 wafer starts per month. The ultimate goal is to scale towards one million—roughly 70% of TSMC’s current total output, all within a single U.S. facility.
Tesla is targeting 2-nanometer process technology, the most advanced node currently in commercial production. The facility’s first major product will be Tesla’s fifth-generation AI chip, AI5, which is expected to begin small-batch production in 2026, with volume production projected for 2027.
The project carries an estimated cost of approximately $25 billion. It is designed to address chip supply constraints that Musk projects will materialize within three to four years. By building its own chip manufacturing capability, Tesla aims to secure a stable supply for its autonomous vehicle systems, Full Self-Driving software, and the company’s humanoid robot, Optimus.
The exact nature of the “launch” event expected around March 21 remains unclear—it could be a formal announcement, groundbreaking ceremony, or construction start rather than full operational capacity. Nonetheless, this move positions Tesla as one of only a few entities capable of producing frontier AI silicon in-house at volume.
