Amazon and Cerebras Join Forces for Groundbreaking AI Chip Collaboration
Amazon Web Services and AI chip startup Cerebras Systems unveiled a significant partnership on Friday. Their goal is to merge their computing chips into a new service that accelerates AI applications, such as chatbots and coding tools. As part of the agreement, Cerebras chips will be integrated into AWS data centers. They will connect with Amazon’s custom Trainium3 AI processors using specialized networking technology.
Cerebras, a company valued at $23.1 billion, is contesting Nvidia’s supremacy with a unique chip design that avoids reliance on costly high-bandwidth memory. Earlier this year, the startup inked a $10 billion deal to provide chips to OpenAI, the mastermind behind ChatGPT. The alliance with Amazon signifies a substantial expansion of Cerebras’ influence, granting access to AWS’s extensive global customer base, ranging from individual developers to major banks.
The collaboration employs a “divide and conquer” strategy for AI inference tasks. Amazon’s Trainium3 chips manage the “prefill” stage, which involves translating user requests into AI tokens. Meanwhile, Cerebras chips oversee the “decode” stage, responsible for generating AI responses. The combined service is set to launch in the second half of 2026. This initiative reflects Nvidia’s anticipated strategy with Groq, a startup Nvidia purchased for $17 billion in December. Amazon expressed confidence that the Trainium-Cerebras combination will outperform traditional GPU solutions in terms of price-performance.
