Shantanu Narayen, Adobe’s Long-Standing CEO, Steps Down After 18-Year Tenure
Adobe Inc. has announced that its CEO, Shantanu Narayen, is set to step down from his position after an impressive 18-year tenure. Despite this, he will continue to serve as the chair of the board. This news was released on Thursday, coinciding with the company’s robust Q1 2026 earnings report, which revealed a 12% year-over-year revenue increase to $6.4 billion and earnings per share of $6.06, surpassing analyst expectations.
At 62 years old, Narayen has been instrumental in transforming Adobe from a desktop software company into a subscription-based cloud services powerhouse. During his leadership, Adobe’s revenue skyrocketed from $1 billion to $25 billion, and the company’s workforce expanded from 3,000 to 30,000 employees. Adobe’s Creative Cloud suite, which includes flagship products like Photoshop and Illustrator, has become an industry standard under his watch.
The leadership transition comes at a time when Adobe, along with other software companies, is facing significant pressure from AI disruption. Adobe’s stock has seen a 23% decline in 2026, largely due to concerns about generative AI potentially diminishing the demand for traditional software tools. This change follows Adobe’s aggressive foray into AI-driven creativity tools, which has seen the annualized revenue from AI-first products more than triple year-over-year. A special committee has been appointed by the board to search for Narayen’s successor, considering both internal and external candidates.
