Vietnam Airlines Seals $3B Deal for 50 Boeing 737 MAX Aircrafts

Boeing and Vietnam Airlines have announced a historic milestone in the Vietnamese flag carrier’s fleet modernization strategy. The airline has finalized its first single-aisle order with Boeing for 50 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. The order was officially announced at an event in Washington, D.C. on February 18, 2026, in the presence of General Secretary To Lam and representatives from the U.S. government.

The addition of the 737-8 aircraft will bolster Vietnam Airlines’ domestic and regional route growth plans. This comes as air travel demand continues to surge across Southeast Asia. With the introduction of the 737-8, Vietnam Airlines will enhance its reliability and capacity. This is crucial as the country’s air traffic is projected to double to more than 75 million annual passengers over the next decade.

“The investment in 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft marks a significant step in building a modern, fuel-efficient fleet while enhancing operational performance and elevating service standards to meet international benchmarks,” said Dang Ngoc Hoa, chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines. “This agreement also deepens the long-standing strategic partnership between Vietnam Airlines and Boeing, creating a strong foundation for our ambition to become a five-star international airline by 2030.”

The 737-8 can accommodate up to 200 passengers depending on configuration. It offers a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km), making it ideal for the airline’s short- and medium-haul network expansion. Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 787 Dreamliners serving regional and international routes. Together, the 737 MAX and 787 deliver a 20-25% fuel-use improvement compared to the airplanes they replace. This supports the airline’s network expansion while lowering operating costs.
