Shantanu Narayen, Adobe CEO, Announces Departure After 18-Year Tenure

Adobe Inc. recently made a public announcement that its CEO, Shantanu Narayen, will be stepping down from his position once a successor is appointed. This marks the end of an 18-year tenure that saw the company evolve into a dominant player in the subscription software market. Post-transition, Narayen, 62, will continue to serve as the chairman of the board.

The announcement was made in conjunction with Adobe’s Q1 2026 earnings report. The report showcased earnings per share at $6.06, surpassing analysts’ estimates of $5.87, and revenue of $6.4 billion, exceeding expectations of $6.28 billion. Despite these robust results, Adobe shares experienced a more than 8% drop in premarket trading on Friday. This reflects investor apprehension about leadership transition amidst a period of AI-driven disruption in the software industry.

Under Narayen’s stewardship, Adobe made a successful transition from perpetual software licenses to the Creative Cloud subscription model in 2013. This strategic move propelled the company’s revenue from under $1 billion to over $25 billion. However, 2026 has seen Adobe shares decline by nearly 23% as Wall Street contemplates the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the demand for traditional software tools.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella lauded Narayen, stating that he “built one of the most important software companies in the world.” The timeline for the selection of Narayen’s successor has not yet been disclosed by the company.
