Unprecedented Security Delays Mar Spring Break Travel in 2026
Spring break travel in 2026 has descended into chaos as travelers across the United States face unprecedented security delays. Wait times have exceeded three hours at major airports due to a partial government shutdown affecting the Transportation Security Administration.
Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport has emerged as the epicenter of the crisis. Travelers reported security line waits stretching to three hours on March 8-10, 2026. Airport officials are urging passengers to arrive four to five hours before their scheduled flights.
Similar delays have been reported at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, where lines have extended into parking garages, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where wait times have approached one hour.
The disruptions stem from a Department of Homeland Security funding lapse that began February 14, 2026. This left approximately 61,000 TSA agents working without pay. Officers received only a partial paycheck on February 28 and are set to miss their first full paycheck on March 14. This has led to increased call-outs and staffing shortages.
Industry forecasts indicate U.S. airlines are expecting 171 million passengers between March 1 and April 30, 2026. This represents a 4% increase over the previous year.
On a positive note, Global Entry services resumed on March 11, 2026, after being suspended since February 22. This provides some relief for international travelers. However, TSA PreCheck lanes remain under strain at many airports despite staying operational throughout the shutdown.
