Unprecedented Travel Disruptions Amid Middle East Conflict: Thousands Stranded

The escalating conflict in the Middle East is causing unprecedented disruptions to the global travel industry. As of Wednesday, close to 2,000 flights have been canceled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded at airports and aboard cruise ships across the region.

Following joint U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran, major airlines such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways have suspended operations. Emirates has announced that all scheduled flights to and from Dubai will remain suspended until at least 11:59 p.m. UAE time on March 7, 2026.

German airline Lufthansa has also suspended regular flights to and from Dubai until March 6. Additional suspensions are affecting various Middle Eastern cities:

  • Tel Aviv
  • Beirut
  • Amman
  • Erbil
  • Dammam
  • Tehran (until March 8)

The crisis is affecting not only air travel but also the cruise industry. MSC Cruises’ 6,300-passenger MSC Euribia ship remains stranded in Dubai, with the company working to secure priority flights for affected guests. At least six cruise ships are stuck in the region, unable to sail to safer waters without entering the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently closed to shipping.

The UAE government has announced it will cover food and accommodation costs for tens of thousands of travelers stranded in the country. However, travel insurance experts warn that many policies may fall short in covering disruptions caused by military conflicts. The Iran war threatens the $11.7 trillion global travel industry as passengers and crew members remain caught in the crossfire.
