Alaska Flight Lands Without Incident Despite Mid-Flight Door Separation

A Grant Aviation flight, carrying a pilot and five passengers, landed safely in Bethel, Alaska, on March 1, 2026. This was after the aircraft’s left rear passenger door separated from the plane during flight. The incident occurred on a Gippsland GA-8 Airvan operating a scheduled service from Eek to Bethel. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the occupants.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), passengers in the back of the aircraft had been attempting to latch the door before it detached from the plane. This happened approximately five minutes south of Bethel. “The passengers tried to get the door re-latched again. Unfortunately, as soon as they let go of it, the door slid back and departed the aircraft,” said Clint Johnson, chief of the Alaska Regional Office for the NTSB.

Dan Knesek, Grant Aviation’s vice president of commercial operations, confirmed that the company has notified appropriate authorities. They are currently investigating the cause of the door separation. In response to the incident, Grant Aviation immediately took action:

  1. Grounded all of its Airvan aircraft
  2. Inspected the doors on each plane to ensure there were no similar issues

The NTSB is monitoring the situation but has not opened a formal investigation. Johnson noted that in-flight door separations are uncommon, particularly in general aviation aircraft. Officials also confirmed that the departing door did not strike the aircraft’s tail surfaces, and no additional damage was reported beyond the door separation itself.

Grant Aviation operates scheduled and charter passenger and cargo service throughout Alaska. They serve communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, the Aleutians, and Bristol Bay with a fleet that includes:

  • Cessna 207s
  • Piper Navajos
  • Grand Caravans
