NVIDIA Pumps $4B into Photonics Companies to Propel Future AI Data Centers
NVIDIA, the AI chip behemoth, unveiled strategic investments amounting to $4 billion in photonics technology firms on March 2, 2026. This move is aimed at securing essential components for the forthcoming data center infrastructure. The company plans to invest $2 billion each in Coherent Corp. and Lumentum Holdings, along with multibillion-dollar purchase commitments.
The collaborations are centered on enhancing optical interconnect technologies that employ light, rather than electrical signals, to transfer data between AI chips. This photonics method offers significantly superior bandwidth and enhanced energy efficiency—vital factors as AI data centers expand to unparalleled sizes. NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, emphasized that the company is “pioneering next-generation silicon photonics to enable AI infrastructure at unprecedented scale, speed, and energy efficiency.”
The investments will bolster expanded U.S.-based manufacturing capabilities and research and development for advanced laser and optical networking products. Industry analysts highlight that AI computing infrastructure is increasingly dependent on optical connectivity as traditional copper-based interconnects fail to meet the bandwidth and power demands of massive AI training clusters.
- Lumentum will utilize the funding to construct a new device fabrication facility.
- Coherent will augment its existing U.S. manufacturing footprint.
