Madeira: The World’s Premier Trending Destination for 2026
Funchal, Madeira – The Portuguese island of Madeira has been crowned the world’s top trending destination for 2026 in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards. It has outshone emerging hotspots such as Quy Nhon in Vietnam, Recife in Brazil, and Puerto Escondido in Mexico.
Often dubbed as the “Hawaii of Europe,” Madeira secured the top spot based on 12 months of consistently strong traveler reviews submitted to TripAdvisor in 2025. The Atlantic archipelago was lauded for the exceptional quality and quantity of visitor feedback across various categories, including hotels, attractions, restaurants, tours, and family-friendly experiences.
TripAdvisor highlighted the island’s beautiful architecture, year-round mild subtropical climate, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and outdoor lifestyle as key attractions. This recognition coincides with Madeira becoming more accessible than ever, with a 17% increase in flight capacity between March 2025 and March 2026 for UK travelers.
Located off the northwest coast of Africa, Madeira boasts volcanic coastal cliffs, natural pools, black sand beaches, dramatic ravines, and wild waterfalls intertwined with lush jungle. The island’s cultural calendar is packed with standout events such as the Carnival in February, the Atlantic Festival in early summer, the Madeira Wine Festival in September, and the renowned New Year’s Eve fireworks.
Following Madeira in the trending destinations rankings, Tbilisi (Georgia’s capital) claimed second place, while Chicago ranked third.
