Global Entry Suspended Amid U.S. Shutdown: TSA PreCheck at Risk
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has temporarily halted the Global Entry program and is considering another suspension of TSA PreCheck. This is due to the ongoing partial government shutdown, causing significant disruptions for international travelers at airports across the country.
Global Entry, a service utilized by 13 million travelers for expedited customs clearance, remains suspended as of February 27, 2026. This has resulted in long wait times at major U.S. ports of entry including Boston Logan International Airport, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and Washington Dulles. TSA PreCheck, with over 20 million active members, was briefly suspended over the weekend before being restored. However, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has issued a warning that it may face suspension again.
The U.S. Travel Association has voiced strong criticism over the suspensions. President Geoff Freeman stated that Global Entry is more than a mere convenience, it serves as a critical security infrastructure. Industry leaders, including Airlines for America, have expressed deep concern that travelers are being used as political pawns during the government shutdown.
Travelers are advised to arrive at airports earlier than usual and consider alternative programs like Mobile Passport Control where available. These suspensions come just weeks before the busy spring break travel season, potentially affecting millions of passengers.
