Big Tech Commits to AI Power Pledge at White House

On March 4, 2026, major technology companies including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Oracle, and OpenAI will convene with President Donald Trump at the White House. The meeting’s agenda? To sign the “Rate Payer Protection Pledge”, a commitment designed to prevent AI data center expansion from escalating household electricity costs.

Under this initiative, these tech titans have pledged to independently supply power for new AI data centers, rather than relying on existing grid infrastructure. White House spokeswoman, Taylor Rogers, confirmed that the companies “will build, bring, or buy their own power supply for new AI data centers“, thereby ensuring that Americans’ electricity bills will not increase as demand grows.

The pledge comes in response to growing public apprehension about rising electricity rates in states with a high density of data centers. A recent CNBC analysis revealed that households in Virginia, Illinois, and Ohio have experienced electricity rate hikes of up to 16% in the past year. Despite this, energy experts remain skeptical about the enforceability of the pledge and its ability to address the core cost pressures stemming from transmission and distribution infrastructure upgrades.
