Final World Trade Center Tower to House New American Express Global Headquarters

Governor Kathy Hochul and American Express announced on February 25, 2026, that the financial services giant will establish its new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center. This marks the completion of the final commercial office tower at the World Trade Center campus, nearly 25 years after the September 11 attacks. Construction is anticipated to commence this spring, with the completion targeted for 2031.

The building, designed by Norman Foster, will span nearly 2 million square feet across 55 floors, accommodating up to 10,000 employees. American Express will be the sole occupant and owner of the sleek glass tower, which features landscaped terraces and gardens interspersed throughout its upper levels. The development, being built by Silverstein Properties on land owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a long-term ground lease, is expected to create over 2,000 union construction jobs and contribute approximately $5.9 billion to New York City’s economy.

American Express CEO Stephen Squeri referred to the project as “an investment in our company’s future, our colleagues and the Lower Manhattan community,” where the credit card company has maintained its headquarters for nearly 200 years. The company will relocate from its current headquarters at 200 Vesey Street, just west of the World Trade Center site. This announcement represents a significant milestone in the long and complex redevelopment of the 16-acre World Trade Center property, which has gradually been rebuilt with multiple towers, the 9/11 memorial and museum, a transit hub, and a performing arts center.
