The Portuguese island of Madeira has earned the title of the world’s top trending destination for 2026. This accolade comes courtesy of TripAdvisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards, marking a significant shift in global travel preferences toward less-crowded, nature-focused destinations.
Often referred to as the “Hawaii of Europe“, Madeira outshone other exciting destinations such as Tbilisi, Georgia; Chicago; Quy Nhon, Vietnam; and Puerto Escondido, Mexico. The awards reflect 12 months of consistently strong traveller reviews submitted to TripAdvisor in 2025, with the island receiving exceptional ratings across hotels, attractions, restaurants, tours, and family-friendly experiences.
TripAdvisor’s findings highlight that the biggest draws are Madeira’s beautiful architecture, year-round mild subtropical climate, dramatic volcanic scenery, and outdoor lifestyle. The recognition comes as the island becomes more accessible than ever, with a 17% increase in flight capacity for UK travelers between March 2025 and March 2026, along with increased routes across Europe.
