Google Secures 150MW Geothermal Energy Agreement for Nevada AI Data Centers

Google has announced a significant clean energy agreement on February 17, 2026. The 150-megawatt geothermal power purchase agreement with Ormat Technologies, facilitated through Nevada’s NV Energy utility, will power its AI data centers.

The portfolio power purchase agreement (PPA) is set to enable Ormat to develop a series of new geothermal projects across Nevada. The first facilities are expected to begin producing power as early as 2028, with operations continuing through 2030. This contract extends 15 years beyond the final project’s commercial operations, providing long-term stability for both Google and Ormat.

“AI is fundamentally increasing electricity demand across the technology sector. Geothermal power is uniquely positioned to deliver the reliable, carbon-free power required to support that growth,” stated Doron Blachar, CEO of Ormat Technologies. The deal was enabled through NV Energy’s Clean Transition Tariff (CTT), a framework pioneered by Google and Berkshire Hathaway Energy to accelerate investment in advanced clean energy technologies.

Briana Kobor, head of Energy Market Innovation at Google, emphasized the importance of the agreement. She stated that it demonstrates “a proven, scalable model for large customers to partner with utilities and technology providers to bring new clean capacity to the grid.” The PPA is subject to approval by the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, with approval expected in the second half of 2026.

In response to the announcement, Ormat shares rose 4.4%, reflecting strong investor confidence in geothermal energy’s role in powering AI infrastructure.
