Leonardo Lands Contract for C-27J Maritime Patrol Aircraft with Saudi Arabia

Italian aerospace and defense firm Leonardo has announced a significant deal with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence. The agreement, revealed on February 16, 2026, involves the supply of four C-27J Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) to the Middle Eastern nation. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2029.

This contract signifies the first procurement of the C-27J MPA with an integrated maritime weapon system. This advanced feature equips the aircraft with the capability to carry torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and depth charges, enhancing its effectiveness in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare operations.

The Royal Saudi Naval Forces are set to become the 21st global operator of the C-27J platform. The aircraft will bolster their capabilities in countering modern submarine and sea surface threats. Additionally, it will serve in search and rescue operations, as well as transport and airdrop missions in the strategically crucial Persian Gulf and Red Sea regions.

The recent deal builds on Saudi Arabia’s acquisition of two C-27J aircraft in the summer of 2025. These planes were configured for firefighting, cargo transport, and medical evacuation. The C-27J MPA integrates Leonardo’s Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance system, featuring advanced sensors for the detection and tracking of surface and submarine targets. The global C-27J fleet has surpassed 290,000 flight hours in service.
