Uber Pledges $100M for Autonomous Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
Uber Technologies unveiled plans on February 18, 2026, to invest over $100 million towards the development of fast-charging infrastructure, specifically tailored for autonomous electric vehicles across the United States. This initiative signifies a strategic maneuver to establish Uber as a key infrastructure contributor in the burgeoning robotaxi industry.
The investment will fuel the construction of high-capacity DC fast-charging hubs, initially in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Dallas. The plan includes expansion to additional cities in the future. These charging stations will be strategically positioned at autonomous vehicle depots, where Uber already oversees daily fleet operations such as cleaning, maintenance, and inspections. Uber currently collaborates with Waymo in Atlanta and Austin, and WeRide in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Furthermore, Uber is offering utilization guarantees to charging network partners like EVgo, Hubber, Ionity, and Electra. This move is expected to help unlock over $100 million in new public EV charging infrastructure worldwide. This financial safety net is designed to support the installation of approximately 1,000 new chargers in major cities such as New York, London, and Paris. Uber anticipates that autonomous vehicles will be operational on its network in at least 10 cities by the end of 2026, responding to increasing competition from rivals like Waymo and Tesla in the robotaxi arena.
