AutoFlight Unveils Matrix: The World’s First 5-Ton eVTOL Aircraft

AutoFlight, a trailblazer in the Chinese electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry, has successfully showcased the Matrix—touted as the world’s premier five-ton class eVTOL aircraft to achieve full transition flight.

The company held a public full transition flight demonstration on February 5, 2026, at its low-altitude flight test facility. This event highlighted the aircraft’s seamless transition from vertical takeoff, through cruise flight, to vertical landing. The Matrix boasts of a 20-meter wingspan, 17.1-meter length, and a maximum takeoff weight of 5,700 kg.

What distinguishes the Matrix from most eVTOL concepts currently under development is its remarkable capacity. The aircraft is designed to accommodate up to 10 passengers, complete with washbasins and lavatories in the cabin configuration. This stands in stark contrast to most competing eVTOL aircraft, which are typically designed for four to six passengers. This innovative approach by Matrix could potentially revolutionize the burgeoning urban air mobility market.

The Matrix will be available in both passenger and cargo variants, with a VIP configuration for six passengers also in the pipeline. The pure electric version offers a maximum range of 250 km, while a hybrid-electric variant extends the range to an impressive 1,500 km. AutoFlight CEO Tian Yu has confidently stated that the Matrix will “break the industry perception that eVTOL equals short-haul, low-load.”
