Meta Commences $10B Indiana Data Center Construction for AI Expansion
Meta Platforms announced on Wednesday that it has initiated construction of a colossal $10 billion data center campus in Lebanon, Indiana. This marks one of the company’s most significant infrastructure investments as tech giants compete to build computing capacity for artificial intelligence applications.
The facility is designed to deliver one gigawatt of power capacity once operational—equivalent to powering approximately 800,000 homes. Spanning 4 million square feet, Meta anticipates the data center to be operational by the end of 2027 or early 2028. It will support both AI workloads and the company’s core social media products.
“This is one of our largest investments to date, and it marks an important milestone in our AI ambitions,” said Rachel Peterson, Meta’s vice president of data centers. The project is projected to generate over 4,000 construction jobs at its peak and approximately 300 permanent operational positions.
The announcement comes as Meta and other tech giants dramatically increase their infrastructure spending. During its Q4 earnings call, Meta indicated it plans to spend as much as $135 billion through 2026 on AI expansion, a significant increase from $72.2 billion in 2025. This follows similar mega-investments by competitors Google and Amazon, which announced spending plans of $180 billion and $200 billion respectively for 2026.
The Lebanon facility represents Meta’s second data center in Indiana, following the company’s $27 billion Louisiana project announced last year.
