Air India Introduces New Dreamliner on Mumbai-Frankfurt Route
Air India has proudly announced the deployment of its latest acquisition, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route, starting from February 1, 2026. This significant development marks a new chapter in the airline’s fleet modernization program under the stewardship of the Tata Group.
The new aircraft, bearing the registration VT-AWA, is Air India’s first purpose-built widebody since its privatization. It made its journey to New Delhi after a nonstop 16-hour, 58-minute ferry flight from Boeing’s Everett facility in Washington state. The Dreamliner boasts three cabin classes—Business, Premium Economy, and Economy—capable of accommodating up to 296 passengers. It also offers modern amenities such as 11.6-inch 4K screens and both Type-A and Type-C charging options.
The Mumbai–Frankfurt service, which connects two major financial and commercial hubs, operates five times a week. Starting February 2026, all flights on this route will feature the line-fit 787-9 aircraft, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience across all of Air India’s German services.
In the pipeline for 2026, the airline anticipates six widebody deliveries, including:
- Additional Boeing 787-9s
- The first of 20 Airbus A350-1000s
