MSC Cruises Announces Monumental $450M Transformation of Freeport Port
MSC Cruises has unveiled an impressive $450 million investment plan to expand and enhance the cruise port at Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. This significant move marks a pivotal development in the Caribbean cruise industry.
The project, announced by Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis, will allocate $400 million toward the construction of new cruise ship berths and the enhancement of port infrastructure. This is aimed at supporting an increase in cruise capacity. The remaining $50 million will be used to develop a new beach club and refurbish the existing retail village.
The revamped port area will boast a welcome plaza, a variety of retail shops, food and beverage outlets, entertainment spaces, and a transportation staging area. It will also feature enhanced amenities designed to elevate the visitor experience. According to Davis, the project is envisioned as a multi-user facility, bolstering operational flexibility and positioning Grand Bahama to attract more cruise activity and accommodate higher passenger volumes.
This investment follows closely on the heels of MSC’s recent announcement to upgrade its private island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The upgrade will include new facilities such as four dining venues, an adults-only beach named Paradise Sands, expanded family areas at Seakers Cove, and a pier extension to accommodate two ships simultaneously by late 2027.
The Freeport development underscores MSC’s commitment to bolstering its Caribbean presence, as the region continues to be the top cruise destination for American travelers in 2026.
