Google DeepMind’s CEO Engages in Daily AI Strategy Talks with Google’s CEO

In a recent episode of CNBC’s podcast “The Tech Download,” Google DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, revealed his daily interactions with Google CEO, Sundar Pichai. These discussions are part of their strategy to navigate the “ferocious competitive environment” of artificial intelligence (AI) development.

Hassabis portrays DeepMind as the driving force behind Google’s AI initiatives. This close collaboration has facilitated swift product rollouts across Google’s ecosystem. He stated, “All the AI technologies are developed by this group… and then it’s diffused across all of these incredible products right across Google.”

The partnership has proven to be crucial in the face of intense competition from tech giants such as:

  • OpenAI
  • Microsoft
  • Amazon
  • Perplexity
  • Anthropic

The strategic discussions between Hassabis and Pichai revolve around the direction of AI technology and the broader needs of the Google ecosystem. They make potential adjustments to their roadmaps on a daily basis. This rapid iteration approach marks a shift for Google, which Hassabis admitted was initially “a little bit slow to commercialize” AI innovations.

Despite being the inventors of key technologies like transformers that power large language models, Google has now returned to its “startup or entrepreneurial roots”. The aim is to be more agile and quicker in delivering products to the market.
