Alaska Airlines Sets Record with 110-Aircraft Order from Boeing
On January 7th, Boeing and Alaska Airlines announced the airline’s most significant airplane order to date. This move is part of Alaska Airlines’ long-term strategy to expand its domestic and international route networks. The landmark order comprises 105 Boeing 737-10 aircraft and five 787 widebody jets, with options for an additional 35 MAX aircraft.
The fuel-efficient 737-10, the largest variant of the 737 MAX family, will assist Alaska Airlines in modernizing its single-aisle fleet. It will also enable the airline to serve more passengers on high-density routes. The five additional 787 Dreamliners will enhance the airline’s long-haul service to Europe and Asia from its Seattle hub. The airline has plans to serve at least 12 international destinations by 2030.
“This fleet investment builds on the strong foundation Alaska has created to support steady, scalable and sustained growth,” said Ben Minicucci, Alaska Air Group CEO and President. “These planes will fuel our expansion to more destinations across the globe and ensure our guests travel aboard the newest, most fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art aircraft.”
This order marks the 60th year of partnership between the two Pacific Northwest companies. It also increases Alaska’s total Boeing order book to 245 aircraft. Deliveries will extend through 2035, with the first 737 MAX 10s expected in 2027. Despite last year’s door plug incident involving one of the carrier’s 737 MAX 9 aircraft, the order demonstrates Alaska’s confidence in Boeing.
