Meta Secures Monumental 6.6 GW Nuclear Power Agreements for AI Data Centers
Meta has unveiled groundbreaking nuclear energy contracts, amounting to 6.6 gigawatts, with three leading providers—Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo. These agreements are set to fuel its ambitious artificial intelligence infrastructure, especially its Prometheus AI supercluster located in Ohio.
These deals, disclosed last Friday, signify one of the most substantial corporate nuclear procurement endeavors in U.S. history. Meta will acquire more than 2.1 gigawatts from Vistra’s existing nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Simultaneously, it will back the development of advanced small modular reactors from TerraPower, co-founded by Bill Gates, and Oklo, supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The contracts are projected to generate thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent operational roles by 2035. Oklo’s advanced nuclear campus in Pike County, Ohio is anticipated to be operational as early as 2030. Meanwhile, TerraPower’s reactors could start supplying power by 2032.
Joel Kaplan, Meta’s policy chief, stressed that “state-of-the-art data centers and AI infrastructure are essential to securing America’s position as a global leader in AI.” The energy is required to power Meta’s Prometheus supercluster, a 1-gigawatt AI computing system expected to be operational in 2026.
Following the announcement, Vistra’s shares jumped 10% and Oklo’s rose by 8%, mirroring investor excitement for nuclear energy’s role in driving the AI revolution. Meta joins other tech giants such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft in resorting to nuclear power to meet the colossal energy demands of artificial intelligence.
