Meta Strikes Historic 6.6 GW Nuclear Power Deal for AI Energy
Meta Platforms has made a historic announcement. In one of the largest corporate nuclear energy procurement deals in American history, Meta has secured agreements with three companies. This is a significant step towards powering its ambitious artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion.
Meta has struck deals with Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo. These agreements could deliver up to 6.6 gigawatts of clean energy by 2035. This is enough to power approximately 5 million homes. The partnerships include 20-year power purchase agreements with Vistra to buy electricity from nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Additionally, they include support for advanced small modular reactors from Sam Altman-backed Oklo and Bill Gates-backed TerraPower.
Following the announcement, shares of Vistra surged 10% and Oklo climbed 8%. The deals will help power Meta’s Prometheus AI supercluster in New Albany, Ohio, and create thousands of construction and operational jobs. Meta policy chief Joel Kaplan emphasized that state-of-the-art data centers are essential to securing America’s position as a global AI leader.
The move reflects the tech industry’s massive bet on nuclear energy to meet AI’s voracious power demands. Meta is joining the ranks of Google, Amazon, and Microsoft in backing nuclear projects.
