Tragic Midair Helicopter Collision in New Jersey Claims Two Lives
On December 28, 2025, a tragic midair collision involving two helicopters near Hammonton Municipal Airport in New Jersey resulted in the death of both pilots. The incident, which took place around 11:25 a.m., involved an Enstrom F-28A and an Enstrom 280C helicopter.
The victims of this unfortunate event were Kenneth L. Kirsch, 65, from Carney’s Point, and Michael Greenberg, 71, from Sewell. Both pilots were known to be regulars at the airport café, having just departed from there shortly before the accident. Witnesses and police reports suggest that the helicopters were flying in tandem formation, approximately a mile and a half from the airport, when the collision occurred.
Following the collision, one helicopter burst into flames and crash-landed in a nearby residential backyard. The other helicopter came down in a farm field. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the incident. The focus of the investigation is on the pilots, the aircraft, and the operating environment at the time of the collision.
A preliminary report from the NTSB and FAA is expected within the next 30 days. However, the final report, which will determine the probable cause of the accident, could take up to two years to complete.
