New €2 Entry Fee for Trevi Fountain Access in Rome

Starting February 1, 2025, Rome will implement a pioneering €2 entrance fee for tourists desiring close access to the iconic Trevi Fountain. This initiative aims to combat overtourism at one of the world’s most visited landmarks.

The innovative ticketing system will enable tourists to pay a nominal fee for access to the fountain’s basin area during daytime hours, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, the view from the surrounding piazza will remain free of charge. Rome’s residents will continue to enjoy free access to the site.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri announced that the city will limit access to approximately 400 visitors at a time, following the completion of recent restoration work.

Impact of the New Fee

Between January 1 and December 8, 2024, the Trevi Fountain attracted approximately 9 million tourists—an average of 30,000 people per day. City officials estimate that the new entry fee could generate up to €6.5 million annually. This revenue will support the maintenance and preservation of Rome’s cultural heritage.

The introduction of this measure follows similar initiatives at other Italian landmarks. For instance, the Pantheon introduced a €5 entry fee in 2023, and Venice implemented a tourist entry fee last year.
