OpenAI Unveils Groundbreaking Sora AI Video Generator to the Public
Marking a significant milestone in the AI industry, OpenAI officially launched Sora, its revolutionary AI video generation tool, on December 9, 2024. This release has been eagerly awaited for nearly 10 months and now provides millions of users with access to technology capable of creating realistic videos from simple text prompts.
The newly introduced Sora Turbo model is a significant upgrade from the preview version released in February. It allows users to generate videos up to 20 seconds long in 1080p resolution. The tool is packed with advanced features, including:
- “Blend” for seamless scene transitions
- Timeline editing capabilities
- The ability to create looped videos
- Option to upload images for custom video content
During the live-streamed announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized, “We don’t want the world to just be text.” However, he also highlighted the tool’s important limitations and safety measures. These include visible watermarks and a restricted ability to upload videos featuring real people, to prevent potential misuse for deepfake creation.
Sora is now available to both ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) and ChatGPT Pro users ($200/month). Each tier offers different usage limits and resolution capabilities.
