Joby Aviation Achieves Historic Milestone in Korea’s First eVTOL Grand Challenge
Joby Aviation has made history by becoming the first company to successfully complete demonstration flights in Korea as part of the K-UAM Grand Challenge. This significant achievement marks a new era for the electric air taxi industry. The California-based company demonstrated a series of flight tests at the Goheung Aviation Test Center in South Jeolla Province on December 13, 2024, showcasing various flight profiles, including fully wing-borne flight.
The K-UAM Grand Challenge was initiated in 2023 by Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT). The program is a testament to Korea’s dedication to becoming a global leader in urban air mobility. A celebratory event was hosted by the government, attended by over 200 guests, including representatives from Korean and U.S. government agencies.
Joby’s electric air taxi is designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers at impressive speeds of up to 200 mph. This high-speed mobility solution offers significantly less noise than traditional helicopters and operates with zero emissions. This accomplishment marks the third country where Joby has received airworthiness certification for demonstration flights, following approvals in the United States and Japan.
