FAA Simplifies Authorization Process for Experimental Aircraft Pilots
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a new program, significantly streamlining the authorization process for seasoned experimental aircraft pilots. The Experimental Aircraft “All Makes and Models” Program now allows pilots with three Authorized Experimental Aircraft (AEA) authorizations to operate additional experimental aircraft without the necessity of a practical test.
This program, enforced by Section 806 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, replaces formal FAA testing with aircraft-specific ground and flight training. Authorization is now granted through a straightforward logbook endorsement from the flight instructor who provided the training. This change effectively eliminates previous bureaucratic requirements.
Representative Sam Graves (R-Mo.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, lauded the change, stating that experimental aircraft pilots previously “had to jump through many cumbersome hoops.” This sensible change is anticipated to reduce costs for the agency while enabling more pilots to enjoy the freedom of flying multiple experimental aircraft types.
