Anticipated MOSAIC Rule Set to Revolutionize Light Sport Aviation by 2025
The aviation industry is on the brink of a significant transformation with the impending final release of the Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule. Expected to be rolled out in early to mid-2025, this rule is set to dramatically broaden the definition of light sport aircraft and sport pilot privileges.
Regarded by many as the most substantial regulatory change for general aviation in decades, the MOSAIC rule will redefine the classification of light sport aircraft. Instead of weight, stall speed will be the new determinant, enabling sport pilots to fly aircraft with stall speeds of up to 59 knots.
This pivotal change implies that approximately 70% of the existing general aviation fleet, including popular aircraft like the Cessna 172, will become accessible to sport pilots. The rule also paves the way for aerial work operations, night flying with endorsements, and operation of complex aircraft.
The FAA Administrator recently expressed that the rule “aims to increase the availability of safe, modern, and affordable aircraft for recreational aviation, flight training, and certain aerial work.”
Industry manufacturers, especially those producing European ultralight-category aircraft like the Tarragon, are ramping up production in anticipation of MOSAIC approval. This could potentially unlock new markets for advanced, efficient aircraft designs.
