Revolutionizing Skin Care: LED Face Mask Boosts Skin Elasticity by 340%
Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a revolutionary face-conforming LED mask. This groundbreaking device demonstrates a staggering 340% improvement in deep skin elasticity compared to conventional LED masks. The research, published in Advanced Materials in October 2024, addresses a key limitation of traditional rigid LED masks that fail to conform to facial contours.
The innovative Face-conforming Surface Lighting micro-LED (FSLED) mask incorporates 3,770 micro-LEDs. These are arranged in a flexible 3D origami structure with a light-diffusion layer that closely hugs facial contours. This unique design minimizes gaps between the light source and skin, preventing the up to 90% light reflection that occurs with conventional masks at distances of just 2 centimeters from the skin.
In clinical trials with 33 participants over eight weeks, the FSLED mask proved its efficacy. It significantly reduced wrinkles, sagging, and signs of aging without side effects like low-temperature burns. “The FSLED mask provides cosmetic benefits to the entire facial dermis, making home-care anti-aging treatment that enhances quality of life possible,” said Professor Keon Jae Lee.
The product is being manufactured by KAIST startup Fronics and will be distributed globally through Amorepacific’s network.
