Apple Appoints New AI Head as John Giannandrea Steps Down
Apple has announced significant leadership changes in its AI division. John Giannandrea is stepping down from his role as Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, and Amar Subramanya is joining as the new Vice President of AI.
Subramanya brings with him extensive experience from Microsoft, where he served as Corporate VP of AI. Prior to this, he spent 16 years at Google, contributing to major projects such as Gemini and Imagen 3.
The leadership transition comes at a time when Apple is expanding its Apple Intelligence features across its range of devices. The company has also announced new AI capabilities, which include:
- Enhanced visual intelligence that can search screen content
- Live Translation features
- Developer access to Apple’s Foundation Models framework for building AI-powered apps offline without incurring API costs
This strategic move positions Apple to accelerate its AI development, as competition intensifies with tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
